State Regulations
Open carry is defined as the carrying around of guns in public. Moreover, there are certain state laws that regulate the so called open carry. On the other side, there is also the so called concealed carry which is carrying a weapon such as a handgun in a concealed manner, either on one's person or nearby. Also, it is important to emphasize that most states banned it in the 19th century as the practice of criminals, whereas open carrying was seen as legitimate for self-defence. However, a special permit was needed in order to have a concealed weapon with only a certain number of people being able to get that licence. This did not applied to the State of Vermont as there was never a restriction at this New England state. In recent years, Maine, New Hampshire, Arizona, Kansas, and Alaska adopted a law stance for unrestricted concealed carry by eligible residents. The rest of the states have adopted only partial restrictions or require a state permit.

Currently, there are three states including Ilinois, Florida, California and the District of Columbia generally prohibit people from openly carrying firearms in public.
Additionally, the Empire State(New York) and South Carolina adopted a more restrictive laws that do not allow open carrying of handguns, but not long guns.

Furthermore, New Jersey, Minnesota and Massachusets do not allow people to openly carry long guns, but not handguns. In the remaining states, people are generally allowed to openly carry firearms, although some states require a permit or license to do so.
