The only thing I regret about this hat is that I didn't buy one earlier. Nice and warm even in the low 20s while sitting and hunting

As seen on

cold ears aren't toughness. they're the first stage of frostbite.

You know the sequence. Twenty minutes out clearing the driveway and your ears go from cold, to aching, to that dead numb feeling where you can't find the top edge anymore. Then you come inside and they burn for an hour while the blood comes back.

That's not being tough. That's tissue getting damaged, and past 55 it heals slower and repeats easier.

Here's the mechanical reason it keeps happening: a knit cap covers your skull and nothing else.

Your ears stick out into the wind with one thin layer of yarn over them, if anything

Your neck is completely bare from the hairline down to your collar

The gap at the back is where wind gets under and goes straight down your shirt

Your forehead takes windburn nobody warns you about until your eyebrows sting

And a hood over top doesn't solve it. You turn your head to check for a truck coming and the hood stays put — now you're looking at the inside of your own hood with your ears still exposed.

You don't need a warmer hat. You need one that covers what a hat doesn't cover.

four places a knit cap leaves open

Ear flaps. Large, faux-fur-lined, and they hang far enough down to cover the whole ear — not just the top. Buckle them together under your chin and the wind has nothing to get at.

Rear neck panel. A faux-fur-lined flap that sits down on the back of your collar and closes the gap where wind gets under.

Brow band. A thick band of faux fur across the forehead. It isn't decoration — it keeps wind off your eyebrows and cuts glare off the snow.

Buckle chin strap. Adjustable, and it means the hat stays on your head. On a ladder, on a farm bike, behind a snow blower, in a gust coming across the house.

The whole thing is a quilted wind-resistant shell over dense plush fleece, with faux fur at every edge that touches skin.

one hat for the whole range of winter

Four seconds to change between them, no tools, gloves on.

FLAPS UP — folded and fastened on the crown. For a breezy day in the 30s. Warm skull, ears free, you hear everything, it barely reads as a trapper hat.

FLAPS DOWN — hanging or buckled under the chin. This is most of winter. Ears covered, neck panel on your collar, wind shut out at the gap.

MASK ON — flaps down plus the detachable face mask snapped across your nose and mouth. For the days it hurts to breathe. Unsnaps in a second and goes in your pocket.

That range is the reason this becomes the hat by the door rather than the hat that comes out twice a year.

YUKON TRAPPER HAT Earns Its Spot For

If you're on a route. Out of the truck, into the wind, back in. Forty times a morning. Ears covered, neck covered, and it doesn't blow off between the mailbox and the door.

If you sit still in the cold. Ice fishing, a stand, a blind — sitting still is colder than working. Flaps down and mask on, and you can stay out there as long as the fish do.

If you've got animals. Water buckets don't care what the windchill is. Flaps down, strap buckled, and you get through chores without going back inside to thaw your ears.

Everyone Loves This product

I work in a giant freezer, mostly 30°F but there are parts that are −10 and −30. My entire body gets cold but my face and head are warm and I even break a sweat. I can't recommend it enough

Kevin G.

Finally, a hat that understands Maine winters. Ear flaps keep those listeners safe from frostbite, while the chin strap keeps the wind from stealing the hat for itself

- Emily James, Police Officer

Husband uses it as a rural mail carrier. It is versatile — ears, mask, or not, however you need. Inside is all plush lined. He says it is superb, especially in the harsh winters of single digits and strong winds

FAQs

Payment method

- We accept payment via Paypal, Credit card, Debit card. If you want to pay via wire transfers (Bank transfer) or Bitcoin, simply email us at support@dinosaurized.com.

What size head does it fit?

Best for 22 to 23.5 inches around the forehead. The buckle strap adjusts down from there, so it runs generous — good news for big heads, and it'll cinch for smaller ones.

Can I wear a knit cap underneath?

Yes, plenty of owners do exactly that below zero. There's room for it.

Can I wear a knit cap underneath?

No. Wind-resistant. Snow brushes off, but sustained rain will soak the shell.
